Everyone with a family history of high blood pressure and/or heart disease wishes there was a magic pill that could prevent the disease from moving any further down the ancestral line. It’s scary, knowing that your father, grandfather and brother have dealt or past away from cardiovascular diseases. And as you take your arginine supplements, exercise, eat right and watch your blood pressure, there is always a risk. That’s why some new information out of the Wolfson Institute of Preventative Medicine in London is so interesting.
Researchers at the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine in London tested apolypill consisting of three blood pressure medications – amlodipine, losartan and hydrochlorothiazide – and simvastatin, a cholesterol-busting drug. They found that during a three-month period, a single polypill significantly lowered blood pressure and cholesterol levels in 84 study participants who were age 50 and older and had no history of cardiovascular disease. – ABCNews.Go.com
Sure, the study used participants with no family history of heart disease, but the results affect all cardiovascular treatments.
The potential for this pill is huge, Ward said, because the data suggest healthy adults 50 and older can prevent heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke from ever happening.
Researchers did say that this pill is not for those who are smokers, on high blood pressure or high cholesterol medications, are obese, or have other ‘bad’ habits. They also noted that the pill should absolutely be ‘used in conjunction with diet and exercise.’
Theoretically, it makes sense that the polypill works, but there is nowhere near the amount of evidence needed to prove it should make the jump from experimental to clinical use.
If you have a family history of cardiovascular diseases, even if you don’t, the reality of this possibly fatal condition is that diet and exercise and a healthy lifestyle are the only, true way to fight the inevitable. If you eat right, maintaining low cholesterol levels, lowering your sodium intake, watching your fatty foods, keeping your blood pressure low with breathing exercises and low stress, as well as l-arginine supplements, and maintaining a positive outlook, you can beat the inevitable.
