Can Yogurt Naturally Lower Blood Pressure - Study


According to a new study, yogurt can help to prevent hypertension. The Framingham Heart Study Offspring Cohort was reported at the High Blood Pressure Research meeting held by the American Heart Association in Washington D.C. During the meeting, the study results were released that showed that people that ate at least one serving of yogurt every three days were at least 31% less likely to develop the condition. This was over those individuals that did not consume any yogurt in their diet at all. What was astounding was that those that were not taking prescription medications for hypertension had even better results with the yogurt. This could be due, in part and according to the study researchers, to the fact that yogurt is dense with essential nutrients while remaining a low-fat dairy option.

In addition to taking an arginine supplement daily, the findings reinforce that dairy products low in fat can make a difference in heart-related issues like hypertension. Moreover, the benefits of l-arginine and low-fat dairy can help with a host of other health issues, as well. In fact, according to the DASH diet recommendations that people with hypertension are encouraged to follow, two to three servings of low-fat dairy are encouraged on a daily basis, to maintain proper nutritional habits. Moreover, it is important to choose a low-fat version of the yogurt for it to work properly, as many yogurts can have added sugars and processed candies that can ramp up the calories and dial down the health benefits of the food.

The study looked at close to 2,200 people, all of whom did not start out with hypertension. The study asked the participants to answer questions about diet and dictated that participants be followed for blood pressure monitoring. Over the next 14 years, almost half developed hypertension; by comparison, only half of the participants ate yogurt at least once a month. Those that ate yogurt were found to have lower to no incidences of hypertension versus those that did not consume it at all.

There are a number of other ways to reduce hypertension as well. Drinking plenty of water is one way, as the body benefits from being consistently flushed throughout the day. Taking an arginine supplement is yet another way, as the benefits of l-arginine have been proven in treating hypertension as well as a host of other issues. These issues include depression, erectile dysfunction, asthma, diabetes and more. Egg Yolk and Heart Health - No Better than Smoking?


By now we all know that eating too many eggs, which are high in cholesterol, is bad for our health. With too much sodium comes an increased risk for heart disease from plaque build-up within the arteries. So, we were all told to eat egg whites as they do not contain as much harmful materials as the yolk itself. Now we are learning just how harmful egg yolk can be to our heart health.

A new study out of the journal Atherosclerosis says that eating “egg yolks regularly increases plaque buildup about two-thirds as much as smoking does. Specifically, patients who ate three or more yolks a week showed significantly more plaque than those who ate two or less yolks per week.”

While it might sound a bit dramatic to compare eating eggs, which are high in protein and not necessarily bad for you should you eat them in moderation, to smoking, which is just plain bad on all levels. But, researchers and physicians are simply trying to put the situation into perspective. Eating too much cholesterol is akin to smoking; they will both increase your overall risk for cardiovascular disease and heart disease.

New Heart Disease Magic Pill

Sure, the study used participants with no family history of heart disease, but the results affect all cardiovascular treatments.

The potential for this pill is huge, Ward said, because the data suggest healthy adults 50 and older can prevent heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke from ever happening.

Researchers did say that this pill is not for those who are smokers, on high blood pressure or high cholesterol medications, are obese, or have other ‘bad’ habits. They also noted that the pill should absolutely be ‘used in conjunction with diet and exercise.’

Theoretically, it makes sense that the polypill works, but there is nowhere near the amount of evidence needed to prove it should make the jump from experimental to clinical use.

The Reality
If you have a family history of cardiovascular diseases, even if you don’t, the reality of this possibly fatal condition is that diet and exercise and a healthy lifestyle are the only, true way to fight the inevitable. Low-Card Diets Linked to Heart Disease


A new study is linking low carbohydrates, an essential element to many weight loss programs, with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. It’s amazing, right, that the very thing you are doing to try and get healthy and lose weight could be killing you. While you’re eating right, taking your arginine supplements to lower high blood pressure, and cutting out your carbs, you could be doing damage to your body.

The Study
According to a study recently published in the British Medical Journal, a low carbohydrate diet can increase your risk for cardiovascular disease by 4%. The tentative reason that researchers pointed out for this increase risk of heart attack was the link between low-carb diets reduces ‘the intake of fiber, vitamins and minerals, while increasing intake of protein, usually accompanied by cholesterol and saturated fats.”

Low-carb diets have been popular for many years now, requiring individuals to reduce or completely cut out carbohydrates in order to fill their body with more lean protein and ‘healthy foods.’ It’s made complete sense over the years that filling up on carbs, especially empty carbs, can be detrimental to your weight. But this new study is showing how cutting our carbs completely means that you’re probably cutting out some elements of your natural diet that are beneficial for your body, main fiber and vitamins.

From a dietary survey, the researchers found that if women decreased their carb intake by 20g a day and increased their protein intake by 5g, they had a 5% increased risk of cardiovascular disease. – Huffington Post

The Response
Of course, the people behind many of these low-carb diets, including the Atkins diet, are speaking out against this recent report.

Responding to these findings, Colette Heimowitz, vice president of nutrition and education for Atkins Nutritionals Inc, told HuffPost Lifestyle: “To suggest this is a report on an ‘Atkins-style’ diet is extremely misleading. This observational study simply states that ‘fewer carbs’ and ‘higher protein’ intake was associated with higher incidence of heart disease.

Noise Pollution and Heart Health

Researchers followed over 50,000 people for an average of 10 years in two major cities. Between 40 and 80 decibels, every 10 decibel increase in traffic noise was linked to a 12 percent higher risk of heart attack. – MensFitness.com

Why does more noise mean higher risk for heart attack? Well, researchers point out that noise can create stress, and stress is what increases heart rate and blood pressure, leading to increased risk for heart attack.  Noise pollution can also affect the amount of restful sleep you get at night, which can also increase your risk for heart attack.

What is noise pollution? Anything that is intrusive, disruptive, or just plain annoying can be categorized as noise pollution. It can be the lawn mower, the traffic outside your window, the construction down the street or the annoying dog next door. If it ‘detracts from regular functioning’ throughout the day or night, it is noise pollution.

What can we do to lower our risk for noise-pollution-heart-attacks? Get away from the noise. Take a vacation, take a hike, head up north for the day and listen to nothing but the calming sounds of the breeze and birds. While we can’t always avoid noise pollution, we can do the small things to maintain heart health and decrease our risk for heart attack. Increase in Hospitalizations for Kids with Hypertension


It is a well known fact that l-arginine supplements can help lower blood pressure and thus maintain a healthy heart, however it’s also a well know fact that America has some of the highest blood pressure statistics in the world. It’s a sad state of affairs if you ask us at Erase Disease, and considering this new study that we came across this morning, it’s not getting any better. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, now affects more children than we ever expected.

Kids and Hypertension
According to CNN, a new study has emerged showing a dramatic increase in hospitalizations for children with hypertension. In 1997 there were 12,661 hospitalizations for children with high blood pressure. In 2006 that number had risen to 24,602, nearly doubling.

Now, this might not be new news to many of us in the heart conscious industry, however what is surprising is the numbers that come after the hospitalization stats; the costs of hospitalizations in the 10 years reviewed reached an estimated $3.1 billion! That’s billion, with a ‘B.’

According to the study via CNN, kids with hypertension stayed in the hospital for up to 8 days, which is double that of non-hypertensive kids admitted.

The cause? Many involved with the study point to the rising obesity and diabetes epidemic that we face today in America, and it’s remarkably depressing affect on kids between the ages of 9 and 18.

A Parent’s Responsibility
A child’s eating and exercising habits are formed young, and most often characterized by what their parents do. Healthy parents are more likely to have healthy kids, and visa versa. So, parents it’s you time to get healthy. If high blood pressure runs in your family, take your arginine supplements, maintain a healthy diet and get active. Show your kids that it doesn’t have to run your life nor be your fate.

Here are some great tips to instilling a healthy mindset with your kids:

1.       Play Time – I know it doesn’t sound like exercise, and that’s what makes it so perfect. Play with your kids! Avoid video games or movies, I’m talking actual outdoors, running around, getting dirty, play. Play catch, basketball, go swimming, visit a bounce gym, ride bikes, go hiking, play tag, even hide-and-seek is an active game that will get you and your kids moving.

2.       Snack Time – Every kid I know wants a snack when they come home from school, and every parent wants to snack when they get home from work. So, instill healthy snacking habits right from the very start. Instead of chips and cookies have bananas, ants on a log, watermelon or strawberries.
Start young with your kids by staying healthy yourself. Set the example for them!

Dark Chocolate and Heart Health...Again


What is it about chocolate that keeps us coming back to this same discussion; chocolate and heart health? The Washington Post came published yet another article on this topic today, quoting yet another scientific study on chocolate and heart health. And this one, like many before, is great news for those who are die-hard chocolate fans, and at the same time are concerned about heart health.

According to the Washington Post, eating dark chocolate every day for 10 years could reduce the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes in some high-risk patients. Do I have your attention yet? Of course, much like the many studies before this one, not all chocolates apply here. Dark chocolate is the healthiest for your heart, but why?

Dark chocolate, according to WebMD, is a potent antioxidant. But what is an antioxidant? Dark chocolate apparently contains a great amount of nutrients and enzymes that prevent the development of chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, Rheumatoid arthritis and cataracts. These amazing antioxidants are great little fighting elements that a packed into dark chocolate.

Why is dark chocolate better for heart health then milk chocolate? Well, the answer should be right there in the question. Milk chocolate is made from dairy, while dark chocolate is derived specifically from the actual cocoa bean itself, which is full of phytonutrients and antioxidents.

Now, don’t go  running to the store to buy some dark chocolate to cure all of your hypertension issues. Maintaining a healthy blood pressure and healthy heart requires far more then just eating dark chocolate, although more and more studies are proving what an asset dark chocolate is to heart health. New Research Proves Exercise Lowers Risk for Cardiovascular Disease


Exercise can lower your risk of death, even if you have high blood pressure. Shocking new research, right? I Mean, we’ve already known this for years, and yet there is new research out just last week that is scientifically proving what we’ve already known; exercise can save your life. Well, exercise, eating healthy and taking your heart healthy supplements like l-arginine.

The Research
Over the course of 12 years, participants in a Taiwanese study were tested based on their activity levels; inactive, low activity levels and moderate or high activity levels.

The risk of death during the study period from all causes and, specifically, from cardiovascular disease -- conditions involving the heart and blood vessels, such as heart attack and stroke -- was much higher among those who were inactive compared to those who were active at all blood-pressure levels, including those with high blood pressure.

According to the researchers, this study is the first of it’s kind to “quantify the impact of exercise on the risk profile of people with high blood pressure….exercise and blood pressure have been managed separately…however, these results suggest that doctors should also discuss the importance of physical exercise as a means to manage cardiovascular disease.”

The Conclusion
It seems pretty silly to run research on something that we’ve known for years, right? And yet, many individuals with high blood pressure are afraid to work out, afraid of getting their heart rate up to high or their risk for heart attack will increase. But in fact, a sedentary lifestyle is one of the leading contributors to heart disease and high blood pressure.

How Can I Work out Safely With High Blood Pressure?
Always talk to your doctor about any work out routines that you’re thinking about trying. The last thing that you want to do is jump into some crazy P90X work out with high blood pressure and poor physical training. Discuss your options, which exercise methods would be best for you, and how often you should be doing them.

When you’re just getting back into the groove of working out again, some of the best activities to engage in are yoga, stretching, and strengthening exercises. A Happy Attitude Means a Healthy Heart

We often talk about how stress can play an integral part in your health and well being, especially when it comes to heart health. According to the study, ‘happiness and optimism tended to predict better heart health.’ The study took a look at over 200 cases to determine the impact of positivity on heart attack and stroke risk. They found through these cases that those patients who had a positive outlook were more likely to maintain a better diet, get more sleep, and exercise more than those who have a negative outlook.

Happy people places less stress on their bodies, had lower blood pressure, and had a much lower risk for heart disease. Positivity showed strong, measurable biological factors such as lower blood pressure and healthier lipid profiles.

It has been well documented that depression and a poor outlook on life can increase a person’s risk for heart attack and stroke. In fact, it is so well known that physicians often treat heart attack recovery with depression medication and refer patients to counseling to combat negative thoughts.

L-Arginine for Heart Health
While maintaining a positive outlook is a key element in controlling blood pressure and lowering your risk for heart attack and stroke, so is eating right and getting those key supplements. Happier people are more active and eat healthier, according to the study. However, sometimes being positive, exercising, eating right and keeping stress low is not quite enough. FDA Finds Statin Concerns

Statins are a common, and when I say common I mean insanely, extremely common, drug that millions of American adults take to control cholesterol levels. In fact, statins are so common that whenever they run a ‘most popular drug’ study, statins are right up there at the top. You’d think with that many people being prescribed these medications and taking them on a daily basis, they’d be safe, right? New information coming out of the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) is changing some of our ideas about statins.


America’s Obsession with Statins

Recently, we discussed all-natural alternatives to beta blockers and statins such as L-carnitine and L-arginine supplements. New FDA Warnings for Statins

According to the Huffington Post, when the FDA first approves a drug, it's for a specific use. Statins initially were targeted to prevent second heart attacks. But once on the market, companies work hard to expand the number of patients taking a drug, and now statins are used widely for primary prevention of heart attacks or strokes. Often, it's only after a drug has been on the market for years and large numbers of people take it that unexpected side effects surface. That's what seems to have happened with statins. 


The FDA is now finding disturbing risks associated with statins, though not all completely quantifiable and/or proven through scientific tests, disturbing none-the-less. See below:

  • ·         Memory Loss – While there is no specific research showing a strong connection between statins and memory loss, the FDA did review many claims of memory loss for men and women, age 50 and older, who experienced memory loss or “changes in thinking skills” while taking the prescription. In most cases, as soon as they stopped taking the statins their memory returned to normal. However, it is important to note that there have been studies attempting to recognize the relationship between statins and dementia, and while no concrete evidence has been found connecting the two, the simple fact that they are researching claims should be cause for concern.
  • ·         Type 2 Diabetes – The FDA also noticed a higher risk for patients on statins for developing type 2 diabetes.


Big Money

While there is clear and unwavering evidence that statins reduce the risk of a second heart attack for patients who have already suffered one, it is important to remember that maintaining a healthy lifestyle works better than any prescription. Managing your weight, diet, exercise routines, stress levels, blood pressure and cholesterol levels are the greater options in this conversation. As are all-natural supplements such as l-carnitine and l-arginine.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids - Supplement or Direct from Fish?

When it comes to all-natural alternatives for heart health, fish oil and omega-3 fatty acids have always been at the top of the list, right up there with L-arginine supplements. But a new study  published in the Archives of Internal Medicine is tossing a wrench into the mix.

But what about fish oil capsules? Doctors have also believed that taking omega-3s as supplements can offer a similar protective benefit to the heart. But a new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine throws the theory into doubt: according to the analysis of 14 controlled trials in which nearly 20,500 patients with a history of heart disease were randomly assigned to take omega-3 supplements or placebo, those taking the fatty acid pills had about the same rates of heart disease, death from heart attacks, congestive heart failure and stroke as those on placebo.

The American Heart Association has been recommending that individuals at risk for heart disease eat ‘fatty fish’ at least two times a week or to take supplements high in omega-3 fatty acids. But is there a difference between omega-3 supplements and ingesting omega-3 directly from the source; fish? According the recent study’s co-author Seung-Kwon Myung, the natural source of omega-3 fatty acids (aka: fish) ‘may be more potent than’ the supplemented version.

As Harvard researchers Drs. Frank Hu and JoAnn Manson also point out in a commentary accompanying the new study, it’s possible too that drugs like statins may mask the benefit from fish oils because the medications are so much more powerful. That may also explain why older trials have tended to show a fish oil benefit, while newer ones have not.

Hypertension Link to Autism

A new study is making waves this week, and for good reason. Autism and fear go hand-in-hand. Everyone, especially parents, fear the unknown. And when it comes to autism there is a lot that is unknown. But a new study is shedding some light on this mysterious condition that affects one in every 88 kids.

According to the LATimes, pregnant women might now have one more good reason to watch their diet and exercise: A new study links autism and developmental delays in young children to metabolic conditions, like obesity and diabetes, in their mothers.

The new study, just published in the journal Pediatrics, “found that women who had diabetes or hypertension or were obese were 1.61 times as likely as healthy women to have children with autism spectrum disorders. They also were 2.35 times as likely to have children with developmental delays."

As proponents of all-natural solutions to hypertension and living a healthy lifestyle withL-arginine supplements, this is very interesting information. In the study, researchers specifically looked at data concerning a mother’s high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes, all preventable conditions.

"There's a temptation to say, 'Gee, we've got increased incidence of obesity and increased incidence of autism — there must be a strong connection between the two,' " said Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York, who was not involved in the study. "We really need to be careful of reading into it."

Though it is an interesting study, it is to be taken as just the beginning of a long string of research to be done on this relationship. However, with that said it is also extremely important to note that if there is even an inkling of a relationship between high blood pressure and developmental delays or autism in children, it should be taken seriously and dealt with immediately.

The good news about this relationship between high blood pressure and autism is that it’s completely preventable. We all know that stress plays a critical role in heart health. Stress can lead to many cardiovascular complications, can increase blood pressure, and can ultimately be fatal. And when it comes to the health and well being of a family member who might be living with cancer, stress levels are beyond the normal limits.

According to a new study published in the journal Circulation, medical and clinical attention must be given to the partners and caregivers of cancer patients in greater numbers.

A new study from the Centre for Primary Healthcare Research, which is associated with Lund University in Sweden, highlights the physical health risks of having a partner with cancer. The findings suggest an increased risk of coronary heart disease and stroke by a range of 13 to 29 percent. Stress is to blame, the researchers say in a press release from Lund.  –EveryDayHealth.com

Caregivers Taking Care of Themselves
When we are spending all of our time caring and worrying about a family member with cancer, especially terminal cancer, we began to take our own health for granted. We began to lose our healthy eating habits, avoid activities, avoid the gym and exercise, put off things as simple as bathing and oral hygiene, and limit our time spent with other friends and family members. Everything is focused on that family member with cancer.

This is completely understandable and unavoidable to an extent, however with this new heart study showing up to a 29% increased risk of heart disease and/or stroke it’s time to evaluate how we not only care for the sick, but for the caregivers as well.

What You Can Do
If you have a friend who is a ‘caregiver,’ taking care of a family member with cancer, be there for them. Force them to take some time for themselves. If you are that caregiver, understand the importance of taking care of yourself for your own heart health.

Soda Linked to Narrow Arteries

New research has emerged this week regarding heart health and ‘fizzy drinks in childhood.’ The study, conducted by the University of Sydney’s Westmead Millennium Institute for Medical Research, found that children 12-years-old who drank soda had ‘narrower arteries in the back of their eyes.’

What does this mean? Narrow arteries in any part of the body are a sign of poor circulation and possible plaque build-up from cholesterol. Narrow arteries, or clogged or blocked arteries, is a sign of future heart disease and many other cardiovascular complications.

In this recent study, the 12-year-olds, 2,000 of them, who took part drank one of more soda a day. Because of this over-abundance of soda, sugar, cholesterol and calories the children were found to have narrow arteries, ‘a factor associated with increased risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.’
